Wizards Off-season To Do’s

The Wizards hired an entirely new front office with the power to make whatever changes it wants.  Early indications are that the new regime is looking to rebuild the team and that major changes are expected. With that in mind, here are the four ideas for the Wizards to do before next season.

  1. Keep Everyone

The first option is to keep the core of the roster intact. They could re-sign Kristaps Porziņģis and Kyle Kuzma, and see if that's enough to contend. With a big three of Bradley Beal, Porziņģis, and Kuzma and a ton of depth, there’s no reason this team shouldn’t be able to compete. But that's boring and also hasn’t worked these past couple of years, and it’s probably not going to happen anyway. So …

  1. Trade Bradley Beal

Last offseason the Wizards were in a lose-lose situation. If they didn’t sign Beal, the fan base would have rioted because they wouldn’t have kept a franchise star. Instead, the fan base is rioting because Beal was signed to a $250 million contract with a no-trade clause. This is why making decisions based on what the fans want right now is always a bad plan. Now we even have the owner Ted Leonsis throwing shade at the old GM for signing Beal to that contract (which by the way is stupid, because there is no way ownership didn’t have a hand in that, especially the no-trade clause part. Would Beal have really turned down that kind of money if Washington had said no to that clause?).

Now the Wizards have to trade Beal if they truly want to rebuild the team. It will be tricky, but let’s be honest – no NBA star gets traded to a place he doesn’t want to go to anyway.  If Beal wants to compete he will 100% accept a trade to a contender.

  1. Sign and Trade Kristaps Porziņģis

I love Porziņģis. Make no mistake – he is the best player on the team. That being said, if the Wizards are looking to rebuild, handing $40 million a year to him wouldn’t be a smart move. They should look to perform a sign and trade so they can get something rather than lose him for nothing.

There have already been rumors that teams are interested, so why not see what the Wizards could get? If the offers aren’t good, go ahead and bring him back, but a rebuilding team has to explore getting draft picks or young players before it commits a lot of money to a star player with an injury history.

  1.  Develop Johnny Davis

Johnny Davis is NOT A BUST. Despite this, most Wizards fans (who probably just hate the old GM because of his draft decision) instantly branded Davis as a wasted draft pick and a horrible player. I, however, was not one of these fans, and at the end of last season Davis made everyone who called him a bust eat their words. The Wizards need to develop Davis in 2023-24. Next season we will hopefully see Davis take that next step to become a better player so his haters will delete their tweets and say they have always been fans. .
