I've always hated when people say that Wayne Gretzky would be awful in today's NHL. While it was a different game in the 1980s-1990s, Gretzky was still the best player on the ice. I decided to do a simulation on NHL 21 and I put Gretzky on the Tampa Bay Lightning and the results will shock the haters.
You may be wondering, why Tampa? They are the recent Stanley Cup champions so I figured the simulation would do the best on the Lightning.
I put Gretzky on the first line as a wing with Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov. In the simulation, that line became one of the deadliest in hockey. Stamkos had 102 points and Kucherov had 106 points. Gretzky proceeded to get 120 points with 60 goals and 60 assists. The funny part is the next best player was Victor Hedman with 60 points. The team finished with 106 points and first in their division.
The playoffs were interesting. The Lighting proceeded to make it to the Stanley Cup Finals after playing three seven =-game series and trailing in all of them three games to one game. They then proceeded to get swept by the Oilers in the finals. Gretzky had 30 points in the postseason and the next best was 10 points by Brayden Point.
So it is safe to say that in todays NHL, Gretzky would still be a amazing player. See you next time.
