Its safe to say that the Alexander Ovechkin - Sidney Crosby rivalry has changed hockey for the better. That is why this article will be about the best moments from this amazing rivalry. This list is in not in a specific order, and just know that this 100% is not biased in any way.
The rivalry will be over soon because both Ovechkin and Crosby are in their mid 30s. When both teams are at the bottom of the division in a few years, at least they have Cups!
Mark-Andre Fleury Game 7 glove save, 2009: This was one great save by Marc-Andre Fleury in the 2009 playoffs. It's Game 7, Alexander Ovechkin gets a breakaway and Fleury stones him cold. After the save, the Capitals Game 7 nightmares continue and they lose. The Penguins would go on to win the Stanley Cup that year. What if Ovechkin had scored on that breakaway? Maybe its the Caps who win the Cup.
The Agent Punch, 2007: OK, some of you probaly have no clue what this is, so listen up. At a nightclub, Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin were hanging out and Ovechkin punched Malkin's agent. To this day no one knows why. But after the punch, Ovechkin was trying to injure Malkin for two years. The best part is that Ovechkin on a podcast straight up admitted that he punched Malkin's agent and said it was fine.
The Winter Classic, 2011: This game was delayed due to rain and during the rain the fans united and started to cheer... FLYERS SUCK. Now that funny. And also true. The game was super intense and Capitals thanks to "Mr Classic" Eric Fehr won the game 3-1. But the Penguins lost more than just the game. At the end of the second period Crosby would get hit by David Steckel and would suffer a concussion that would take Crosby out the remainder of the 2011 season as well as the first 20 games in the next season.
Nick Bonino series-clinching overtime goal, 2016: I HATE THIS MOMENT!!. But my Dad always says that accuracy is more important than popularity. That's beside the point. This game was amazing. The Caps came back from being down 3-0 to tying the game 3-3. Then Nick Bonino scored the overtime winner on a rebound. The Pens went on to win the Stanley Cup.
Evgeney Kuznetsov series-clinching overtime goal, 2018: Quite possibly the greatest goal in Caps History. In overtime Ovechkin stole the puck from Crosby, and Kuznetsov got the puck and deked five-hole to score on Matt Murray. This was the best goal in franchise history (until the Lars Eller Cup winning goal) and everyone on the Caps celebrated as they went on to win the Stanley Cup.
Dueling hat tricks, Game 2, 2009: Second round, game 2 between the Caps and Pens. Every fan remembers this game. The final score was 4-3 with the Caps winning. But in the game we saw both Ovechkin and Crosby dominate. This was a rare game with dueling hat tricks. Crosby and Ovechkin continued to try and one up each other and say anything you can do I can do better.
T.J Oshie hat trick, Game 1, 2016: This Game 1 thriller was a nail biter as each team traded chance after chance. The funniest part about this game was the fact that Jay Beagle was a stick magnet. He had a stick get caught in both his helmet and skate. But the best part of this game was T.J Oshie scored on a wraparound to win the game in overtime. Oshie was the only person to think that the goal was in. Every Penguin and announcer did not think that it had crossed the goal line. After fans saw the angle that showed the puck was in, hats started to rain down on the ice.
This is one of the greatest rivalries in hockey and it's sad that its almost over. But anyway see you next time on Berman's Sports Blog.
